Each year, towards the end of the first half term (in February) pupils at Kenilworth school hold an ‘Africa Week’, comprising of events within the school, raising money and awareness in support of life changing projects throughout Africa – with particular focus on Uyogo village, in Tanzania.
The activities are organised by ‘USU’ (Urban Sounds for Uyogo), a sixth form student led group. The Africa theme is brought into lesson and assemblies, whilst in the evenings, ‘USU’ led concerts are held, to showcase the talents of pupils.
Africa week events have been held at Kenilworth School since 2004 and have raise over £100,000. Funding from Africa week has significantly assisted KUFL in school building projects, water schemes and supplying bikes to enable pupils within Uyogo to safely attend schools.
Audio visual equipment supplied to the Uyogo schools by Kenilworth School, has been used to allow the UK and Tanzanian students to directly interact, whilst surplus books and materials have also been sent.
In recent years, during Africa Week, Kenilworth Books have allowed USU and KUFL to create a window and interior display, highlighting the Africa Week activities and featuring books about Africa or by African authors.
During 2024, the Kenilworth Books book club have chosen “Stay with me” for January/February written by Ayobami Adebayo.
